Jesus-"Friend of Sinners"

In reading—“Breaking the Missional Code” by Ed Stetzer and David Putman, I came across this paragraph on pg. 117 that is a great reminder of the danger of Christians to separate a little too much from those who need to hear the Good News of Christ the most.

“Jesus was referred to as many things in the Gospels. In Luke he is characterized as a ‘friend of sinners.’ This was not meant as a compliment. As a matter of fact, it was part of the reaction the religious leaders had toward Christ and his tendency to go where the sinners were. It was one thing to call a tax collector named Levi to follow him, it was another to go to his home.”

How have you seen this attitude at work around you?

Have you been guilty of it?

What ways or steps can be taken to avoid this?

Who should we be like more: the religious leaders or Jesus?

Share your thoughts.
