Is God Your Co-Pilot?

We like the phrase: “God is my Co-Pilot” because it means that we’re the ones still driving, still the ones in control.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Co-Pilot is usually not as good or less experienced than the Pilot. And for God to take that role of Co-Pilot really means that:

• We own the car—it’s our car to drive—i.o.w.—it’s my life…

• We are the better Pilot for our car—i.o.w.—we know better than God

We want God in our car only so long as we’re the ones still driving—we don’t want to consider ourselves as the passenger to our own life. If there’s an emergency, then we’ll let God take the wheel for a while. But in many ways, He’s more like our Chauffeur until we can get back in the driver’s seat.

I hate to break this to you, but God shouldn’t be your Co-Pilot, He needs to be your Pilot. And He is not your Chauffeur taking you where you want to go, He is the one who determines the destination and the speed. And He doesn’t always fly around the turbulence.

Oh and in case you’re wondering, He gets frustrated with Back-Seat Drivers just as much as you do!

Quote-- "Eternal Impact"

Back in June, I picked up a book by Ken Hemphill called Eternal Impact. My intention was that I would lead the study in the fall. Well, obviously, things haven’t worked out that way.

I picked it up the other day and began reading for my own benefit and for future ministry. I found a telling quote early on in the Preface.

“Many churches are more concerned with placating the saved than with rescuing the lost. Our budgets don’t reflect that we are concerned with allowing God to add to our number daily those who are being saved. Our small group structure is often allowed to stagnate as we hold our ‘holy huddles’ while people in our neighborhoods search for authentic community. The kingdom-centered church acknowledges that the plight of the lost outweighs the comfort of the saved.”

Do you agree with this quote?

Does this attitude exist in your church?

Why does the church exist?

Jesus-"Friend of Sinners"

In reading—“Breaking the Missional Code” by Ed Stetzer and David Putman, I came across this paragraph on pg. 117 that is a great reminder of the danger of Christians to separate a little too much from those who need to hear the Good News of Christ the most.

“Jesus was referred to as many things in the Gospels. In Luke he is characterized as a ‘friend of sinners.’ This was not meant as a compliment. As a matter of fact, it was part of the reaction the religious leaders had toward Christ and his tendency to go where the sinners were. It was one thing to call a tax collector named Levi to follow him, it was another to go to his home.”

How have you seen this attitude at work around you?

Have you been guilty of it?

What ways or steps can be taken to avoid this?

Who should we be like more: the religious leaders or Jesus?
